Our Guiding Principles

Desire to Think Big We encourage ideas in which our funds and/or time can make a unique and lasting contribution. The Foundation will operate in a way that ensures flexibility to respond to such opportunities.

Commitment to Making a Difference We seek to bring about meaningful, socially beneficial change to achieve environmental sustainability. We work to identify unique and strategic opportunities to make a difference. We then work with our grantees to optimize strategies as necessary to achieve greater effectiveness.

Respect for All People The success of the Foundation depends on seeking out and listening to the ideas and advice of others.  We are committed to openness, transparency, and learning and approach our role in philanthropy with humility and respect for others.

Collaboration We are committed to collaboration whether with grantees, co-funders or other colleagues.  We approach our collaborations with respect for our partners, an understanding that solutions reside with those we serve, and recognition of the privilege inherent in philanthropic work.

Equity We seek to promote the values and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our grantmaking.

Belief in Individual Leadership We support effective, visionary, and collaborative leaders, as they motivate others, drive change, and produce results.

Tie Practices to Values We work to have our practices be consistent with our values and are committed to continual learning to ensure consistency with our values over time.  We have committed a minimum of 25% of our annual grantmaking to black, indigenous, people of color and other disadvantaged communities.
